Out With The Old, In With The New: Cleaning Tips For Your Salon

It’s official: spring has sprung. With it comes a totally fresh start for you and your business. So say goodbye to the dark and the dreary – create a bright and airy feel to your salon by following these four simple steps during your annual spring clean.

Declutter and deep clean

If you were a customer, what kind of atmosphere would you want from a salon? An inviting area that’s free from clutter and mess would probably be on the top of your list. And with the days becoming longer, lighter and warmer, now’s the perfect time for a deep clean to scrub away any noticeable dirt that has built up over winter.

Take an objective look around your salon and single out any untidy displays or busy-looking decorations. Remove any tools or equipment that are no longer necessary, and dust and sterilise the surrounding space.

Find and wipe down any similarly hard-to-reach areas that you may have neglected recently – like the tops of shelves or behind your reception computer.

Store products away correctly

A tidy room equals a tidy mind. So stop the scurrying around to find products and equipment in front of your clients, and give designated spots for anything that made it through your big declutter in Step 1.

If you don’t have enough room to store them correctly, however, why not invest in some smart storage units? Not only can they keep you organised, but they can also add to your salon décor if you choose the right colour scheme.

You could also label drawers to help your staff more easily find the products they need, and further speed up service times.

Donate or sell anything unwanted

If you come across products or equipment that you haven’t used in a long time, why not try and sell or donate them? Working but outdated appliances and products that aren’t yet expired but no longer form part of your treatments are two perfect candidates.

Start-up salons are often looking for second-hand equipment online, or you can donate products (if they are sealed) to your nearest homeless shelter to help those who really need it.

You’ll be helping your community whilst decluttering your salon – it’s a win-win situation!

Start a new cleaning schedule and add finishing touches

Now your salon is spotless, how can you stop it from descending into chaos again? A good way to keep on top of the cleaning throughout the rest of the year is to create a completely new cleaning rota.

Divide chores up equally between the team, and swap them every two weeks or so. Keep a tally of who’s doing what, and check tasks off before you leave for the day to make sure everything is clean and tidy for those that open up in the morning. Every month, try to recreate the deep clean to keep your salon up to scratch.

Then you have a perfect base to bring spring into your business. Place candles around the room to make your salon smell fresh. Fill vases with seasonal flowers to add a feminine touch to any space. Even show off your new products in an Easter-themed window display to attract customers during the bank holiday weekends.
